Serving your Community: Feeling Down Stand

One of my favorite community service activities is building and setting up an enclosed stand filled with delightful surprises for our neighbors and local workers. Recently, we stocked it with stuffed bears and a variety of books suitable for both adults and children. I involve my kids in the process, encouraging them to select books and bears they’re ready to part with. They eagerly contribute to the stand and love checking each morning to see which items have been taken. The joy really comes when all the bears have been chosen, prompting them to dig through their toys for more stuffed animals to donate. This has been an excellent way for them to learn about giving and the value of letting go of possessions.

The top shelf of the stand is reserved for books- those handpicked by my children for their peers and the selections I’ve made for adults. Commonly, such stands operate like mini-libraries where people exchange books, but ours has a unique twist. We call it the “Feeling Down Stand,” a spot to visit when you need a stuffed animal to hug or a good book to lift your spirits. Everyone is welcome to take whatever they need, and over time, as our stand has become a community fixture, neighbors have started contributing books too.

Perhaps this weekend, you could consider a similar project with your kids. It’s a simple home endeavor that can profoundly impact your community and enrich your family’s experience of giving.
